YVES SAINT LAURENT - THE MOVIE

Yves Saint Laurent, where should I start?

The movie began with a scene demonstrating Yves’ appearance at Dior. Yves was handsome, tall and had a charming, bright smile. He looked excited and nervous behind his iconic glasses. Yves loved to spent time sketching at home as he wasn't happy in school. With a string of fabric, a mismeasured dress could become a masterpiece in his hands. That dress was worn by Victoire, a model and one of Yves’ business partner. Who ever knew Victoire could end up having an one-night affair with Pierre Bergé?

Pierre - Yves’ longtime-lover and lifetime-partner. Pierre Bergé had supported Yves with all of his heart and soul since the first day they met. He was the brain of Yves Saint Laurent and a keeper of the designer from doing wrong. But Yves liked to discover, from drugs to one-night stands. Spring and autumn were the only times he felt happy. After a long time with Pierre, Yves fell in love with Karl Lagerfeld's boyfriend - Jacques de Bascher de Beaumarchais - so much that he admitted to Pierre: "I love him." The confession sounded like it was predicted by both of them. Pierre then visited Beaumarchais and Yves' new relationship couldn't last long. In 1989, Beaumarchais died of AIDS.

Yves Saint Laurent was a depressed maniac. And Pierre was always there to make sure his loved one was safe. Yves once agreed with Pierre that fashion was not art, and Pierre added that it'd take an artist to do something like this. ‘This’ stood for the creativity Yves had to offered to fashion. The originals that received applauses the moment they appeared. Pierre remembered Yves’ tears in their first show. When he looked at Yves, the time stopped.

Through all arguments and pain, Yves and Pierre were the soul of Yves Saint Laurent. The movie ended with a scene of Pierre putting his hand on Yves' shoulders, while he was sketching. "It's so beautiful.", Pierre said. Then he walked to the window and looked outside. When he looked back, Yves had gone. What wasn’t in the movie is the reason why Yves passed away. He died of brain cancer without any personal knowledge. Pierre and Yves’ doctor agreed that he shouldn’t know as it could break him into pieces.

After the scene, there came an applause from the audience. Yves Saint Laurent was a touching and complicated movie of himself. I hardly ever watch a so good movie that makes me either want to smile or cry. It touched my core so deeply that I didn’t want to express any feelings to preserve its own influence better. Having an obsession with a specific fashion era, a fashion designer or anything is kind of sick. I’ll volunteer to be called that way. I won’t be surprised if people think Yves’ lifetime was depressing. To me, Yves had lived a life with no regrets and he had made the fullest out of it. Being torn by what you love to do is worth every judgement. What I’ve learned along this way is a secret that noone’s told me. I realized that the moment you decide to follow your heart, success knocks your door.
